History of the Story City Reminder - Written by Eloise Thorson in 2021
- In February 1959, Richard and Eloise Thorson began publishing an advertising shopper, The Story City Reminder. The business was first located at 626 Broad, presently a Thrivent Financial office. In 1961, the printing business was re-located to the 821 Lafayette Avenue basement area of their Story City home.
- The business remained at that location until 1967, when it was sold to The Story City Herald, then owned by Marvin Brown. Dick was hired by The Story City Herald as advertising salesman. In 1972, the Thorsons purchased The Story City Herald and the Reminder from the Browns.
- During the years the Thorsons owned the Reminder Shopper, Dick served as ad salesman and pressman, helping prepare ad pages for printing and mailing. Elly assisted with ad layout and bookkeeping. Several employees hired during those years included Karen Lilly, Donna Fuller, Elvina Naig, Susan Helland, Pat Twedt and Maxine Lekwa, among others.
- Besides postal mailing to surrounding communities and rural areas, local youngsters were later hired to deliver the Reminder to Story City homes each Wednesday. The Stanhope Shopper was also published later by the Thorsons, and commercial business printing was a major part of the company.
- A Reminder Recipe Book was printed in 1961, which included the many recipes shared by local readers for publication each week in the pages of the Reminder. Many area residents may still be using that popular cookbook today.
