Dorrance Ivan (Andy) Anderson was born Jan. 30, 1917, to Orville Jay and Clara Isabella Havnen Anderson. He died May 14, 2017, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
Dr. Anderson served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kankakee (AO-39) in the South Pacific. He was accepted to U.S. Navy Flight Training in 1943, earning his Wings, and flying PB4Y2s (the Catalina Flying Boat). Of the 27 officers in his flight school class designated aviators, only 5 survived the war. Andy continued in the U.S. Navy reserves and retired proudly as a Captain in 1977. |

Obituary
Dr. Dorrance Ivan (Andy) Anderson died peacefully in Santa Barbara, CA on the morning of May 14, 2017. He was 100 years old.
Andy was born in Blue Earth, Minnesota on January 30, 1917. Moving from Minnesota to Randall, Iowa in 1929, Andy met his next door neighbor and future wife, Katherine Elizabeth (Betty) Erickson. Andy was graduated from Randall High School in 1935, then worked for 2 years in order to help his parents financially and to earn money to pay for an education at Iowa State University, from which he was graduated in 1941 with a degree in Dairy Industry. He was national champion in dairy products judging in 1940 and was hired by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Marketing Specialist for Los Angeles, CA. After Pearl Harbor and with the declaration of war, even though offered deferment as a consequence of the importance of his job, Andy enlisted, received a commission through the V-7 Program as an Ensign, USNR (Herman Wouk and Cyrus Vance were classmates), and reported to the USS Kankakee (AO39), an oiler in the South Pacific. In 1943 Andy was accepted to US Navy flight training, earned his Navy Wings, and flew PB4Y2s (the Catalina Flying Boat). Of the 27 officers in his flight school class designated aviators, only 5 survived the war. Andy continued in the US Navy Reserves and retired proudly as a Captain in 1977.
After the war, Andy entered dental school at the University of Minnesota. Graduating in 1949 and wanting to return to Southern California, Andy and Betty (married 1943), along with their sons Mike and Tom, moved to Carpinteria, CA in 1953, where he practiced general dentistry for 52 years. Betty, for many of those years, was his dental assistant. Keeping the practice in Carpinteria, they moved to Santa Barbara in 1959 and to Montecito in 1974. They retired together from dentistry at the ages of 88 and 87. In Montecito, Andy fastidiously cared for an acre of fruit trees, mostly avocados, and was a member of Calavo.
While in the practice of dentistry, Andy and Betty generously gave of their time to help others in need. In the 1950s, they gave one free day of dental care a week to children of Latino farm workers in Carpinteria. In 1960, the Anderson family travelled to Madagascar for 4 months where they opened a dental clinic in Manambaro. Andy went alone to Kathmandu, Nepal in 1962 to open the country's first modern dental clinic. In 1963, he was with Dr. Albert Schweitzer in Gabon. Trips followed over 20 more years to Ghana, Peru, Haiti, New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, and various countries in Southeast Asia. There were approximately 30 trips of one to three month's duration which were completely financed by Andy and Betty. As a result of his many travels, Andy was asked to became a member of the Explorers' Club, which he enjoyed for more than 50 years.
Additional service was given through Rotary International. Andy was a member of the Montecito Club and was District Governor of District 524 in 1972.
Dorrance Ivan Anderson, DDS was predeceased by his parents Orville and Clara Anderson, his older brother Alvin Anderson, and his younger sister Alta Bryant. He is survived by his wonderful wife of 74 years, a son Michael Anderson (and his wife Sheryl) of Cohasset, MA, a son Thomas Anderson (and his wife Patricia) of Baltimore, MD, grandchildren Thomas Anderson (and his wife Sinha) of Amelia Island, FL, Julie Anderson Hutsell (and her husband Andrew) of Arlington, VA, Charles Anderson (and his partner Kimberly Krall) of Deer Isle, ME, Tyler Anderson of Arlington, VA, Joseph Anderson of Arlington, VA and great grandson Maddox Ivan Anderson of Amelia Island, FL.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, La Cumbre Road, Santa Barbara, CA, where Andy and Betty have been members for 57 years, at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 23, 2017. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date.
