Richard S. Munsen
Richard Stanley “Dick" Munsen was born Dec. 1, 1921, to Serral and Belle Wiggin Munsen. He died Feb. 5, 2018, and is buried in Story City Cemetery, Story City, IA.
Lt. Munsen served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 97th Heavy Bombardment Group, flying 22 missions in his B-17 Flying Fortress before being shot down over Nazi occupied Yugoslavia. For 45 days he evaded capture by hiding in the rugged mountain terrain as told in his book “Bail Out Over the Balkans”. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. |
