TV Schooltime: Landmarks in Iowa History: Story City
In this episode, Herb Hake takes viewers to Sheldall Schoolhouse, one of the oldest school buildings in Iowa, now located in Story City. He also talks about some of the customs of the Norwegians who settled the area around Story City. This television program originally aired on WOI-TV in central Iowa on March 1, 1960.
There are a few of inaccuracies in the film. The Sheldall Schoolhouse was used for 25 years. The school was built in 1860, not in 1859. Two terms of school were taught in 1859-1860. However, these two terms were held in the homes of Mr. Biggs and Mr. Woodworth, while the schoolhouse was being built. There were several female teachers at the Sheldall Schoolhouse. In fact 13 of the 30 teachers were female.
