The first building built in present-day downtown Story City was built at this location by J. A. Olen. However, this building burned down before it was completed. In 18.., the American Hotel building was built. After its use as a hotel, it was divided into several spaces for businesses and an apartment in the back. In the 1990s, plans for a new public library were announced and the Bertha Bartlett Public Library was completed in 1994.
